Cross your fingers that we do not have any more technology glitches! Thursday, February 11, the fourth graders conducted our "unofficial winter bird count". Fourth graders, it is your turn to send back the data you collected. We read the temperature at our weather station and carefully counted birds. We have had quite a lot of rain. The paths were only muddy in two spots, which were easily avoided. However, the ditches are overflowing. More trees have been flooded. We also spotted patches of red on the grass. The dwarf sundew plants are back in full force. They are carnivorous and are endangered in some areas of the United States. Their scientific name is Drosera brevifolia Pursh. They are not documented in Georgetown County by the United States Department of Agriculture. We need to set the record straight!

On Monday, February 15, my husband went to the forest with me. He has a better eye for clues. He found a sapling (young tree) that a buck (male deer) had been using to scrape his horns. He also thinks foxes are using some of the holes in the forest in logs and dirt mounds, etc. (I thought so!) I found a newly gnawed sapling, which I think indicates the presence of beavers. The hole on the bank of the ditch could contain an animal, maybe a beaver because they also dig tunnels.

This blogging stuff is cool!
The outdoor classroom was awesome. All the animals in the woods were cool. There were birds' nests, beaver holes, robins, and insects.
When I went to the forest, I saw a lot of birds. Some types of birds that I saw were robins, killdeer, and crow. I did not see a beaver, but I did see his habitat.

When I first went out on the trail, I saw a bunch of bird and squrriel nests all in the trees. It was like a party or a festival. I also saw tons of water everywhere we went. I saw a Killdeer, Robin, and a crow. I was so happy that I got to go to the forest to discover nature for the first time.

I thought the dwarf sundew was very interesting and it sure looked very rare
to me. Next time, I hope we see the beavers. I think it would be an awesome experience to see them in their natural habitat.
I saw lots and lots of black birds and I found two birds' nests. I also saw a spider and sundew plants. It was exciting to see all of these things.
Hey everybody! I saw lots of cool stuff like the buzzards and the red dwarf sundew that looked very pretty, but hard to see on the ground on our walk along the trail.
I saw a blue bird, hawk, black bird. It was cool and really windy and muddy. We saw a hole in the tree. A pond we saw was overflowing.
I loved the red grass that we found. It was so awesome which is dwarf sundew. I wish wecould have seen foxes out there in the woods, but I did like the birds. It was very cool.
I thought that all of the things were interesting out there in the forest. I saw deer corn, beaver marks, birds, animals' homes, all kinds of plants, owl pellets, bird's nests and all kinds of other interesting things, too.
WHEN WE WERE WALKING TO THE WOODS, WE WENT TO CHECK THE TEMPERATURE. IT WAS 34 DEGRESS. WE HEARD A LOT OF NOISES. IT MUST HAVE BEEN BIRDS. WHEN WE WERE IN THE WOODS, IT WAS QUITE MUDDY. WE WALKED AROUND IN THE MUD AND I FELL IN A HUMONGOUS HOLE. I THOUGHT IT WAS A TUNNEL. WE HEARD A LOT OF BIRDS. WE HAD AN AMAZING JOURNEY ON FEBRUARY 11,2010.
On my trip I saw birds and little holes in the ground. Next, I saw a big ditch where the beavers could make a home and it was full of trees.
On my journey on February 11,2010, I saw 30 birds in all at the front of the Pleasant Hill Elementary School. I saw 2 bird's nests, 1 beaver's dam which was very huge. I heard 2 woodpeckers pecking on two different trees. I saw 10 very small holes in the ground. I saw a huge ditch full of gallons of water. Last, but not least I saw 4 robins, 2 blackbirds, and two regular birds. I had so much fun on my journey.
We heard a male deer creeping in the woods who made a loud scary sound. We also saw a ton of birds going on top of the tree. Also, we saw a squirrel on top of the tree trying to go to the other side. We were going fowards in the woods and we saw its trail.
On Febuary the 11th, 2010 we went out to the woods. Before we went out, we read the temperature. I think that the temperature was 34 degrees. I saw 4 birds in the field and some birds in the trees. We had to be kind of quiet to count the birds. I think that we heard or saw a beaver under the sticks making some kind of sound. We had so much fun with Mrs. Jolla and I hope we will go back in the woods with her again!
PHES forest is an inspiring and interesting place. The animals are harmless. PHES woods is a peaceful place. The ditches are filling up because of all the rain and the beavers are coming back (yay!). The day we went to the woods I counted thirty-four birds,we also saw a woodpecker. PHES school is a peaceful, happy, and fun place.
About two weeks ago we went outside. When we went outside I heard two singing birds and saw five black birds. I also saw a big beaver dam and I loved it.
