Academic Team

Twenty-five students from WIS participated in the Georgetown County Academic Fair on Saturday, January 23 at Georgetown Middle School.  During the competition, the students were challenge d to think on their feet and work co o peratively. Though academics w ere the primary focus of the day, students were also given the opportunity to show off their creativity and athletic skills. Preparation began in September and really paid off; All three teams came home with first place trophies. Congratulations to all of the participants! We would also like to thank the coaches for their hardwork and dedication!

Waccamaw Intermediate held its annual Geography Bee Competition. Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geography Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.

 Spelling Bee

Waccamaw Intermediate School had their annual National Scripps School Spelling Bee on December 4 at 8:30 AM with 25 classroom winners from each 4th, 5th and 6th grade classroom.  Mr. Jon Tester, the Executive Director for Elementary Education, welcomed parents, classroom alternate winners, and community spectators and explained the rules to the audience.  Officials were Mr. Jon Tester, judge; Mrs. Laura Almonte, WIS librarian,  pronouncer;  Ms. Peggy Sumlin, WIS academic coach, official scorekeeper, Mrs. Barbara Nesmith, WIS Curriculum Coordinator, back up scorekeeper;  and Mrs. Bethany Miller, WIS music teacher, timer and word recorder. The 1st round, each speller introduced themselves and the homeroom they were representing.  After thirteen rounds, using the official Scripps National Spelling Bee School Pronouncer Guide and guidelines, 4th grader, Adam Battey won spelling the word expectant.  Other words that Adam spelled correctly included brigadier, paramecium, adieu, calisthenics, vengeance, omniscient, rutabaga, hysterical, casserole, tutor, bargain, and continent.  The 1st alternate was Spencer Kemp, also a 4th grader.  Spencer correctly spelled adjudicate, latitudinarian, anticoagulant and other words.  Adam will represent WIS at the Sun News Regional Spelling Bee later this year, and Spencer is the alternate in the event that Adam is unable to compete.  We are very proud of all of our WIS spellers.
